St. Paul MN State Capitol

Visit a theater to take in any play, and the star of the show usually becomes obvious within the first few minutes. It's the actor who grabs your attention from the moment the production begins and never lets go. Usually, it's a person... but not always. In the new play "Our House," the star of the play is also one of Minnesota's most unique historic buildings. The Minnesota State Capitol, which recently saw major renovations, is actually the star of the show.

Star of the Show: The Unique History and Exciting Present of the Minnesota Capitol Building

As you shop around for Saint Paul homes for sale, you'll see that the city is loaded with interesting history. The Minnesota State Capitol building is at the center of that history, having first opened its doors in 1905. In the many years since, the State Capitol has seen more than its share of stories and is now the star of its own show.

Major Renovations to the Minnesota Capitol Building

While the first Minnesota State Capitol building was completed in 1905, the building that you see today has some key differences from the original structure. From 2013 to 2017, the building underwent a major renovation, with $300 million dedicated to restoring the building both indoors and outside. During the renovation, lawmakers packed into two tiny rooms to handle all of the work that would normally take place at the Minnesota State Capitol. Today, they're back to working in the hallowed halls of the State Capitol, and there are also some pretty unique guests visiting the Minnesota State Capitol these days.

Those unique guests come from the production of "Our House," a play set in the Minnesota State Capitol building. Actors, production staff, and of course spectators can be found around the State Capitol these days. This exciting production shines a light on the history of the Minnesota State Capitol, shows how state government works and looks at how citizens take a role in shaping the decisions of the government.

  • The re-opening of the Minnesota State Capitol building following renovations in 2017 has been met with much fanfare and loads of special events. You won't find many plays taking place in state capitol buildings, which is part of what makes "Our House" special.
  • The production does not take place only in one set location in the Minnesota State Capitol. Instead, it moves throughout the building, and you move with it. The stunning rotunda is a key location, but you'll also have the opportunity to explore locations throughout the building.
  • The play was created by the husband and wife team of Leah Cooper and Alan Berks, who went straight to the source to learn how government works in Minnesota. They interviewed tour guides, employees, government workers, and even major political figures like Roger Moe while working on the project.
  • The result is a unique, detailed look at how state government works in Minnesota, and how the population – including members of the audience – influences all of the work that takes place inside the Minnesota State Capitol. It's a great opportunity to see the building first-hand, learn some history, and have fun in the process.
