The Walker Art Center
The Walker Art Center located in Lowry Hill, a neighborhood of Minneapolis, is a multidisciplinary modern art center. It is among the most visited museums of modern art in the country boasting an annual attendance of nearly 700,000 visitors. Among its permanent collection are over 13,000 contemporary art pieces including books, drawings, media works, costumes, photography, paintings, sculpture, and prints.
Thomas Barlow Walker started the Walker Art Center in 1879 as a personal art gallery, before officially establishing the Walker Art Gallery in 1927. In 1940, its name changed to the Walker Art Center. Today, its campus includes a theater, shop, restaurant, and an events space.
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is one of America's largest sculpture gardens with an impressive 40 permanent art installations and numerous other temporary pieces.It is widely considered the Minnesota park system's crown jewel because it unites two of the city's cherished resources – its cultural life and parks. Since its 1988 opening, the sculpture garden has had millions of visitors.
The park was reopened in 2017 after undergoing reconstruction.Today, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a must-see destination for visitors and locals. If you live in the city or are planning to move here, you will enjoy access to the park every day from 6:00 AM to midnight.
The award-winning park acts as both a transition site and an access point to the Walker Art Museum.It offers an excellent relaxation area that allows you to enjoy both its contemporary art pieces and public outdoor space.
Spoonbridge and Cherry
The Spoonbridge and Cherry fountain-sculpture designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen opened in 1988 as the centerpiece of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Minneapolis residents have since embraced it as the city's icon.
The spoon weighs about 5,800 pounds while the cherry on top weighs 1,200 pounds. The stem of the cherry acts as a fountain that sprays into the spoon's bowl and then off into the pond. The pond beneath the impressive sculpture was purposely shaped to resemble the linden seed, which draws attention to the linden tree rows planted in the park.
