Minneapolis - St. Paul Best Spots Family Picnic

Picnics gained popularity in post-Revolutionary France when the royal parks became open to all. Today picnics are a great way to share quality time with friends and family of all ages. July is National Picnic Month, so it's a perfect reason to celebrate at one of these outdoor spots in the Twin Cities suggested by our REALTORS®.

  1. Minnehaha Regional Park - 4801 S. Minnehaha Dr., Minneapolis 55417
With its stunning scenery and variety of activities, Minnehaha Regional Park never gets old no matter how many times you visit. The magnificent 53-foot waterfall is the primary draw, but the park also features views of the Mississippi River and limestone bluffs. There are walking and cycling paths, a disc golf course, and a volleyball court along with a wading pool and playground for the kiddies. Bring Fido along for a romp in the off-leash dog park. Hours are 6 a.m. - midnight daily.
  2. Como Park - 1225 Estabrook Dr., Saint Paul 55103
Whether you're a weekend warrior or a culture lover, you'll find something of interest at Como Park. Get a great workout at the six softball fields, three soccer fields, baseball field, golf course, or mini-golf course. If you prefer more sedate activities, stroll among the impressive works of art or the colorful gardens. Of course, the Como Park Zoo is full of fun for all ages. Be sure to check out the schedule of free live music through mid-September at Lakeside Pavilion. Summer park hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission to Como Park is free, but donations are welcome.
  3. Minneapolis Sculpture Garden - 725 Vineland Pl., Minneapolis 55403
The whimsical creations at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden will turn anyone into an art lover. Dozens of modern and contemporary sculptures from the adjacent Walker Art Center dot the grounds. Kids love having their picture taken alongside the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry by Pop Art legend Claes Oldenburg. If the clouds roll in, take the opportunity to tour the exhibits of visual and performing arts at the Center. Tickets are $15 for adults, while those 18 and under get in for no charge. The Sculpture Garden is open daily from 6 a.m. - midnight, and admission is free.
  4. Loring Greenway - 1234 Lasalle Ave., Minneapolis 55403
Who says picnics are just for weekends? Break up a workday by brown-bagging it at Loring Greenway, a serene urban garden and walkway that spans Loring Park and Nicollet Mall. More than 200 species of trees grow in this strip of land, providing generous shade cover and making you feel miles away from the urban hustle and bustle.
  5. Hidden Falls Regional Park - 1313 Hidden Falls Dr., Saint Paul 55116
The namesake feature of Hidden Falls Regional Park, tucked away deep within the grounds, is well worth the walk, but there are plenty of other spectacular views of the river bluffs. Bring your fishing pole and try your luck catching walleye, northern pike, muskie and other game fish in the Mississippi River. Barbecue grills and fire rings are available on-site, but you're welcome to bring your own grill as well. Hours are sunrise until 9 p.m., and leashed dogs are welcome.
