Relocating to Different State - Counselor Realty

Moving across state lines comes with a unique set of challenges. Because it is more complex than a move across town, you'll want to start planning well in advance. The good news is that you aren't the first person to move into Minnesota from out of state, we can help ease the transition and help you settle in when you arrive.

  1. Hire a Buyer's Agent
A buyer's agent will represent your best interest throughout the process. Your agent will help identify homes within your budget and select neighborhoods, schools, etc. that best suit your needs.

  2. Hire a Relocation Specialist
Relocation specialists often work for free and many larger employers have relocation specialists they use for new employees. Relocation specialists earn their money based on referrals to vendor services and products you purchase when you move into the community. They will help with everything from organizing the move to helping you find lawyers, doctors, plumbers, dentists, and other service providers when you arrive.

  3. Hire a Local Lawyer
A local lawyer understands Minnesota real estate law and can help you navigate the legal logistics of closing the sale. Having a local lawyer helps expedite the process and protects your interests.

  4. If You Don't Use It, Lose It
Make sure to divest yourself of excess property before you make your move. Old furniture, broken appliances, toys that aren't played with, etc. just take up space in the moving truck. It is best (and easiest!) to garage sale, give away, or donate any item that is currently collecting dust in your home.

  5. Don't Buy "Sight Unseen"
Never buy a home without walking through the property first. This helps protect you from scammers and purchasing a substandard property. Investing in a plane ticket and a couple of nights in town is an investment you won't regret. Moreover, it gives you an opportunity to get a feel for the neighborhood, meet your neighbors, experience your commute, etc. before you close on the home.

  6. Hire a National Title Company
Hiring a title company with a national network that operates in both states makes it easier to complete the paperwork. This will save you time and money in the long run.

  7. Go with a Local Lender
It is easier to get a home loan from a local lender than an out-of-state lender. You should expect the lender to scrutinize your employment history, assets, debts, a little more than usual. Choosing a lender that your agent recommends and has an established relationship with can help make this process a little easier.

  8. Research, Research...and More Research
It is always advisable to know as much as possible about the homes, neighborhoods, schools, traffic, shopping, etc. in your new city. Don't hesitate to ask your real estate agent and lawyer every question on your mind, and don't shy away from spending hours on the internet researching the area.

  9. Hire Someone to Do the Heavy Lifting
Investing in PODS or a professional mover can make your cross-country move a lot easier. All you have to do is pack everything up, and it will be waiting for you when you pull into the driveway of your new home.

There are some amazing Minneapolis homes for sale this fall. We encourage you to call today to learn more about these properties and to discuss your cross-country moving needs with our team.
