Re-Siding a Home - Counselor Realty

To re-side, or not to re-side the home where you reside. That is the question that many homeowners ask themselves when the weather gets a little bit warmer. The fact is that many Minneapolis homes for sale feature new siding. When you ask the right questions and make the right choice, re-siding your home is an investment that can add value to your property. As you ponder the decision, be sure to consider the following before you make your choice.

Consider the Choice of Siding

Siding has evolved considerably over the past century. Today, there are many options to choose from. Vinyl siding comes in a wide array of colors; it's lightweight and durable and will provide reliable protection for 30-50 years. That is why it is one of the most popular choices around the country. On the downside, it's not eco-friendly and can warp with time.

Similarly, aluminum siding is equally as durable, low-maintenance, and is available prefinished with your choice of color or wood grain. It also lasts about 50 years. However, if it is damaged, the dents are permanent, and any scratches require a professional to touch up.

You can also choose fiber cement or stucco siding. These are durable and create an upscale look on the property. Most offer 30-year warranties, which you may need because they can crack in extreme heat and cold.

Finally, there is always tried-and-true wood siding. Easily installed and visually appealing, wood siding can last 100 years or longer. One of the few drawbacks is that it requires considerable maintenance and is susceptible to rot and insect infestation if it is not maintained correctly.

Consider Your Goals

What is it you want to achieve by re-siding your home? Consider what you want regarding maintenance, curb appeal, durability, eco-friendliness, and cost. Find a balance between your desires and the options above. Keep in mind that if you do intend to sell your home, you will want a siding that appeals to prospective buyers, and just like a new roof, new siding is something they will notice.

It is also advisable to choose a siding option that blends with your home's architecture and neighborhood homes. While it is acceptable to choose a color option that stands out a little bit, you don't want to put stucco siding on a home in a neighborhood where every other house is covered in wood or vinyl siding.

Hire a Reliable Contractor

Never pull a name out of the phone book whenever you're doing a renovation or remodeling of your home. Before you hire a contractor to re-side your home, make sure that they are the best contractor for the job.

It's crucial to hire a contractor that has the skills and experience to perform the job to the highest degree of quality. Always check references and make sure that they're in good standing within the community.

Choose a contractor that offers reliable guarantees and warranties for their work. Make sure that they're familiar with the specific installation instructions for the siding you choose. Finally, make sure that they have an up-to-date certificate of contractor's insurance, liability coverage, and workers' compensation insurance. If they don't, don't let them on your property because you could be liable for any injuries they suffer while re-siding your home.
