Winter Hiking Around Minnetonka - Counselor Realty

When the snow flies, the outdoor fun is just beginning in Minnesota. The Twin Cities area becomes a winter wonderland this time of year, with ample opportunities to get out and explore.

So strap on your snowshoes and dust off your trekking poles. It's time to explore these great winter hikes in Minnetonka and the Twin Cities area!

  1. Lone Lake Park - 5624 Shady Oak Rd., Minnetonka, MN 55343
A quiet park in the southwest corner of Minnetonka, Lone Lake Park offers 146 acres of woods and open spaces, with a 1.2-mile trail that provides beautiful views of the lake. The trail is always left un-plowed in winter to facilitate snowshoeing, and a separate 5-mile multi-use mountain bike trail is also open to winter hiking and fat-tire biking. Located a short drive from many Minnetonka homes for sale, Lone Lake Park's trails also connect to additional hiking routes in nearby parks, including Shady Oak Beach and Three Rivers Park.

  2. Minnehaha Falls - Godfrey Rd., Minneapolis, MN 55417
Nestled in the heart of Minnehaha Regional Park in Minneapolis, 53-foot Minnehaha Falls is one of the most iconic outdoor attractions in the Twin Cities. In winter, the frozen-over waterfall becomes a spectacular ice sculpture, surrounded by a rugged snowy gorge. The park is also home to some lovely hiking trails, just footsteps from these Minneapolis homes for sale. Snowshoeing on the frozen surface of Minnehaha Creek is also a popular winter activity.

  3. Purgatory Park - 17315 Excelsior Blvd., Minnetonka, MN 55345
The largest of Minnetonka's community parks at 155 acres, Purgatory Park offers excellent winter hiking opportunities. This hilly, picturesque park includes a 2.2-mile trail system plowed in winter to keep it snow-free for hikers. The trail system consists of a 1.2-mile Inner Loop, a 0.5-mile North Leg, and a 0.5-mile South Leg, all of which traverse beautiful hilly woodlands, meadows, and creek bottoms.

  4. Battle Creek Regional Park - 2300 Upper Afton Rd., Maplewood, MN 55119
A favorite year-round spot for outdoor recreation in Saint Paul, Battle Creek Regional Park encompasses more than 750 acres of woods ad open meadows. It's a great place for a winter hike, with 5 miles of designated snowshoe trails, plus several additional miles of multi-use hike & bike trails. The park is located in the Saint Paul suburb of Maplewood, 10 minutes from downtown and a stone's throw from these Saint Paul homes for sale

  5. Jidana Park - 3408 Jidana Ln., Minnetonka, MN 55345
Although Jidana Park is relatively small at just 60 acres, it offers some of Minnetonka's most beautiful winter scenery. The park includes a short section of trails and boardwalks that provide access to an expansive wetland marsh alongside Minnehaha Creek. The wetlands and surrounding forests provide refuge for a wide range of winter birds, making Jidana Park one of the top destinations for bird watching in Minnetonka.

  6. Mississippi Gorge Regional Park - 3349 W River Pkwy., Minneapolis, MN 55406
Mississippi Gorge Regional Park straddles the line between Minneapolis and Saint Paul, with trails accessible on both sides of the Mississippi River. It's a genuine urban oasis, encompassing the forests, bluffs, and bottomlands along the river. Access points just off the Ford Bridge lead to snowshoe trails on the Minneapolis side, and you can get to some of the best Saint Paul trails by entering the park via Mississippi River Blvd.

Winter is the best time to explore the great outdoors in Minnesota, and hiking is the perfect way to enjoy some social-distanced fun and adventure. Call today to learn more about life in Minnetonka and the surrounding areas.
