One-of-a-Kind Museums - Twin Cities - Counselor Realty

Museums offer the chance to spend some time alone or with family and friends as you explore and learn. The Twin Cities have excellent one-of-a-kind museums located near Minneapolis homes for sale and ranging from one dedicated to Russian art to one that's perfect for model train enthusiasts.

We recommend exploring these 5 unique museums around the Twin Cities:

  1. The Museum of Russian Art – 5500 Stevens Ave. (corner of Diamond Lake Rd. and 35W), Minneapolis, MN 55419
    The Museum of Russian Art
is North America's only museum devoted to Russian art, from Muscovite Russia to the post-Soviet period. Located in a historic building of the beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival style, it houses more than 5,000 works and holds several exhibitions each year as well as lectures, concerts, and more. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

  2. Twin City Model Railroad Museum – 668 Transfer Rd. Route 8, St. Paul, MN 55114
Model train enthusiasts of all ages will love visiting the Twin City Model Railroad Museum's intricate displays, located just around the corner from St. Paul homes for sale. You'll be able to see an O-scale exhibit with such details as a remarkable reproduction of the St. Anthony Falls Milling District, an electric streetcar line, and the 1913 Great Northern Station. A Lego train is also on display, complete with nearly half a million Legos and three functional train loops. And through April 24, you'll be able to see trains come to life as the lights are turned down and specially lighted models of vintage passenger trains run. Street lights glow, and a blizzard covers the trains' setting, creating a magical scene. Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday for daytime hours and 3-7 p.m. Saturday for night trains.

  3. American Swedish Institute – 2600 Park Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55407
    American Swedish Institute
is comprised of both a museum and cultural center, including the magnificent Turnblad Mansion. Collections include paintings, textiles, glass, and more objects that focus on the lives of Swedish-Americans. You'll also be able to see generational collections that document immigration and settlement in America or sign up for special programs such as Nordic handcraft workshops. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Sunday.

  4. Bakken Museum – 3537 Zenith Ave. South, Minneapolis, MN 55416
At Bakken Museum, it's all about the passion for innovation, whether it's in science, technology, or the humanities. You'll be able to see it demonstrated by testing out some of Ben Franklin's static electricity experiments, visiting the Mary and Her Monster exhibit to learn about Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," or creating towers, bridges, and more at the KEVA Art and Architecture Studio. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.

  5. Weisman Art Museum – 333 E. River Rd., Minneapolis, MN 55455
Located on the University of Minnesota's campus, the Weisman Art Museum offers exhibits of art, letters, and more. You'll be able to view exhibits on Printmaking as Social Justice in 1930s United States, Legends and Myths of Ancient Minnesota, and much more. In the museum's permanent collection, you'll find over 25,000 works of art, with plenty representing American modernism, ceramics, and Korean furniture. Hours are noon-5 p.m. Thursday-Sunday.
