Last-Minute Moving Tips - Buy a Home - Counselor Realty

Moving is rarely an easy task, even if you're moving to new Victoria homes for sale just across town. Between sorting through belongings, securing moving boxes, and packing things up, the moving process can make you feel like you're losing your sanity. When you have to move in a hurry, feelings of anxiety and stress can escalate to feelings of panic.

If you're faced with a last-minute move, take a deep breath and don't get overwhelmed. There are things you can do to keep your sanity and get the job done in a pinch.

  • Decide on Logistics
First, decide if you're moving yourself or hiring a professional mover. While moving yourself to White Bear Lake Homes for Sale may keep costs down, organizing, packing, loading, and unloading will take you a lot more time. Take a look at your moving budget, then assess the amount of time you have to move. If time restraints make a self-move impossible, hire a moving company that can help with packing and logistics.
  • Get Rid of Unwanted Items
Before you start packing, get rid of items you aren't taking with you. The less you have to pack, the easier and faster packing will be. Sort items into three categories – throw away, recycle, and donate. Resist the urge to pack everything and sort it out later as this will only cause more stress later.

Once items are categorized, get them out of the house as soon as possible. You can schedule a pickup for furniture and bulky items, donate clothes and household items to Goodwill or local thrift stores, and donate towels and blankets to local animal shelters.

  • Gather Supplies and Start Packing
Whether you move yourself or hire a professional, you still need boxes and packing supplies. Don't procrastinate – gather your supplies and start packing, because the clock is ticking. To save time, follow some packing tips that will speed things up:

    • Gather Boxes – Grocery stores throw away empty boxes, so you can find a variety of different sizes in the parking area behind the store. If you work, stop by before or after work and load boxes in your car. Boxes are free for the taking.

    • Start Packing – With a last-minute move, don't worry about grouping similar items together just put them where they fit. Grouping linens and towels with fragile items will prevent breakage. Set up boxes as you need them to prevent more stress from too much clutter.

    • Pack Clothes as They Are – To cut down on boxes and save time,  pack clothes with their hangers in strong garbage bags. Rather than unpacking dresser drawers, leave items in the drawers, then wrap each drawer with a blanket or packing materials.

    • Pack a Bag with Essentials – Pack a special bag with essentials like important documents and papers, day-to-day toiletries, medications, electronic chargers, and a flashlight. Packing some snacks will curb hunger while moving and after you reach your new destination.

  • Ask for Help
A last-minute move can stress you out, so don't hesitate to ask for help from friends and relatives in the area. Helpers can speed up packing time and watch over kids and pets to keep them occupied and out of your way while you pack. To show your appreciation, you can order a pizza while you pack or schedule a more formal sit-down dinner at your new home.
